My cat Spangle is a very playful and ambitious, but not very expert Hunter. Since we live in the country, surrounded by fields of crops, she obviously gets great satisfaction (and entertainment) by going out into the surrounding fields to hunt for mice, voles, and anything else small and furry that she comes across.
Great! Most commendable! Until she catches some unfortunate specimen. At which stage she carefully carries it back into our backyard (to use an American term) where she releases it so that she can play at hunting for a bit longer! A couple of days ago I noticed her stalking some sort of small field mouse among the undergrowth under the apple trees within 10 feet of our kitchen door. Oh, well done, Spangle! Only a few minutes later, I saw a movement out of the corner of my eye, and there was said mouse creeping silently away past the garden shed! Spangle continued to hunt around among the weeds for at least ten minutes, totally unaware that her prey had snuck away.
Needless to say, except when necessary to go in or out, for the moment I am keeping the kitchen door carefully shut. And that cat is being carefully frisked whenever she is coming in, to make sure she isn't carrying one of her new-found friends inside! I'm very much afraid that either she wants some live toys to play with, or she doesn't quite believe that we can provide properly for ourselves, and she feels we need a source of fresh food inside the house for the winter. Either way, ugh!!!!!
